NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF STATE SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS COALITIONS
News Brief #3019 Category: Public Understanding & Engagement
TITLE: "Math + Crime =3D Hit" AND "The Science Guy Grows Up"

Math and science have reached prime time. The April issue of Wired =
magazine
features interviews with the creator of "Numb3rs," the new CBS drama
featuring a mathematician, and Bill Nye, who is making a comeback on a
public television show addressing adult science topics. =20

The "fascinating" way in which scientists and mathematicians think =
inspired
Cheryl Heuton to create a drama about a math professor who helps the FBI
solve cases. An interview she once did with Bill Nye the science guy
convinced her of the importance of getting people interested in math and
science. "I wanted to influence people to think more about math as an
everyday language that they can use," she said.=20

The show scrupulously checks its math with the chairman of the math
department at Caltech. "With mathematicians watching," Heuton said, =
"they're
going to catch anything."

As for Bill Nye, the "Science Guy," he is returning to television in =
"The
Eyes of Nye." Nye says he hopes to "get people thinking about the =
processes
behind science and how they give you insight into everything around =
you."=20

Making science funny is not tough, Nye says. "Humor is everywhere, in =
that
there's irony in just about anything a human does...The more you find =
out
about the world, the more opportunities there are to laugh about it."=20
