Mount Washington Observatory
Position Title: Director of Development


Basic Function: The Director of Development and Marketing is responsible
for
all aspects of membership development, gifts, endowments, fundraising
programs and events, and other revenue sources; fostering good public
relations with contributors, trustees, and members; preparing strategic and
long range plans to enhance revenues and membership; and promoting the
Mount
Washington Observatory, enhancing its public image, both locally and
nationally.

The Director of Development and Marketing also develops and facilitates
programs for trustee development in such areas as fund raising, governance,
and strategic and long-range planning.

Basic Responsibilities:
1) Increase membership
* Develop and implement programs and events to increase membership
* Maintain ongoing contact with existing members

2) Increase member donations and gifts
* Conceive, organize, and implement fund raising drives and events,
including but not limited to Annual Fund, donor events, and annual fund
raisers
* Develop and maintain a planned giving program
* Develop and maintain a major gifts program

3) Increase corporate and foundation giving
* Develop, implement, and maintain programs for corporate and foundation
giving

4) Conduct capital fund raising campaigns
* Develop and implement capital fund raising campaigns
* Identify and coordinate appropriate fund raising training sessions and
programs for staff, volunteers, and trustees

5) Identify and facilitate procurement of grants and contracts
* Seek out, identify, and procure grants and other sources of funding to
enhance the development of staff, trustees, and membership
* Cooperate with all other departments to assist in identification and
procurement of grants, contracts, and other funding

6) Coordinate and facilitate trustee and staff development
* Participate in appropriate committees, including trustee development,

raising, and nominating
* Identify, facilitate and coordinate training programs and seminars for
staff and trustees

7) Maintain fiscal responsibility for department
* Prepare budget assumptions and requests for department
* Prepare department budget in cooperation with Department of
Administratio=
n
* Operate department within budget

8) Attend staff and trustee meetings and prepare reports as appropriate

9) Write articles for Windswept and other publications as appropriate

10) Conduct performance appraisals for department staff in a timely fashion

11) Perform other related tasks as assigned

Reports to: Reports directly to the Executive Director

Supervisory Responsibilities: The Director of Development oversees and
motivates assistants as assigned to the department.

Qualifications:=20
* Bachelor's degree in related field, or equivalent in experience
* Demonstrated success in fundraising and membership development
